The castles in the Dordogne

The Dordogne is full of historical monuments and exceptional natural sites. Take advantage of your stay at the Chalets du Périgord to visit some castles.

Périgord and its 1001 castles

For lovers of castles, the Dordogne is the ideal department. You have the opportunity to visit monuments from different eras.

These heritage treasures mostly overlook the Dordogne or the Vézère. Take your cameras to admire Castenaud, Losse, Les Milandes, Beynac, Fénelon, Biron, Hautefort or Puymartin.

Castelnaud Castle

This medieval fortress was built on a rocky outcrop. Built in the 12th century, it is a perfect example of a medieval fortification. It houses the Museum of War in the Middle Ages.

Every day of the year, you can visit this sumptuous medieval testimony and get an exceptional view of the Vallée de la Dordogne.

Milandes Castle

In the 20th century, the château des Milandes was the home of Josephine Baker. This remarkable building was built in 1489 and was, until the Revolution, the home of the Caumont family.

All year round, visit this sumptuous castle, its falconry and its French garden classified as a "remarkable garden". Enough to delight fans of architecture and Joséphine Baker who can admire her stage outfits.

Puymartin Castle

The Château of Puymartin, a listed monument, is ideally located 20 minutes from the Chalets du Périgord. A visit to this place traces 800 years of family history through the remarkably well-maintained and decorated rooms. The visit can be done alone to go at your own pace or accompanied by a guide to know all the anecdotes.

This castle in Dordogne is also full of mystery with the legend of the white lady. Indeed, during the wars of religion, Thérèse of Saint-Clar was surprised by her husband and locked up in one of the towers of the castle. To find out more, you can participate in the escape games organized on site.
