Sarlat is the capital of Périgord Noir and gastronomy in the Dordogne. It’s a strategic point for discovering the whole region and its gentle way of life. This medieval town has inspired many a scriptwriter, and its market is the place to go to discover our magnificent terroir.

Discover Sarlat
Our family campsite in the Dordogne, “Les Chalets du Périgord”, is located high above Sarlat town center. Less than 5 minutes away by car, and for the more courageous a 25-minute walk, the cobbled streets of the town are waiting to be explored. During your stay in the Périgord Noir region, we recommend a stroll through Sarlat’s old town and a trip back in time. The medieval half-timbered houses are remarkably well preserved.
As night falls, street entertainment takes over, bringing a sparkle to children’s eyes.
Every summer since 1952, the town has hosted the Jeux du Théâtre festival. And in November, high school students discover the Festival du Cinéma.
Périgord gastronomy
The list of local Périgord products is relatively long. Discover and taste walnuts, ceps, cabecous, walnut oil, truffles, foie gras, duck breast and duck confit. The covered market, accessible via Place de la Mairie, is open every day. You can also meet local producers on Wednesday and Saturday mornings in the streets of Sarlat.
Numerous gastronomic events are organized throughout the year, including the Truffle Festival, Fest’oie and the Taste and Gastronomy Day. Of course, you’ll find all these products on the plates of the restaurants and farm inns around Les Chalets du Périgord.
Sarlat’s must-sees
During your visit to Sarlat’s historic center, admire the Cathédrale Saint-Sacerdos, the Manoir de Gisson and the house of the writer, La Boëtie.
This town of Art and History, its unusual charm and its many period buildings make Sarlat an ideal location for films such as “Les Misérables”, “La Fille de D’Artagnan” and “Jappeloup”.
The panoramic view from the glass elevator is a great way to gain height. It is located in the bell tower of the former Sainte-Marie church, now a covered market.
